Class Descriptions

Mrs. Grommet’s 8th Grade Physical Science

There are two branches of physical science, chemistry and physics.  Currently, we are building a fundamental understanding of chemistry, the branch of physical science that focuses on matter and its changes. Second semester we will turn our focus to leaning the basics of physics, the branch of physical science that studies forces and energy.  While learning the fundamentals of chemistry and physics, students will follow a continuous learning path which emphasizes an understanding of units, unit conversions, lab procedures, graphing, science related math skills, and an appreciation for the immense extremes of God’s creation.

I have no special talents.  I am only passionately curious. – Albert Einstein

Mrs. Grommet’s Honors Geometry

Honors Geometry is geared to place students into an Honors Algebra II course.  The course has four objectives:  geometry concepts, proofs, constructions, and algebra.  Most lessons will be highly integrated with advanced algebra.  Students will learn to enter, graph, and explore functions on a graphing calculator.  Problem sets routinely include challenge problems with the purpose of exposing students to work which can’t always be figured out during the first attempt.  Students understand that their mathematical ability is God given.

Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required…Luke 12:48

Mrs. Grommet’s  Algebra and 7th grade Pre-Algebra

Eighth graders taking an Algebra course are potential high school Calculus students.  Calculus teachers will tell you that Calculus students may have more trouble with their Algebra than their Calculus!  The goal of this class is to nail the fundamentals which will lead to success in future math classes.  For most students, success in math comes with diligence in doing the homework.  Along with working the problems, students are learning to be more aware of the form they use to show their work.  A disciplined habit of logically showing the work which proceeds to an answer will aid in a greater understanding of the concept being practiced.

We are what we repeatedly do.  Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.  – Aristotle

Mrs. Grommet’s 7th Grade Math

The goal for this class is to strengthen the foundation necessary for success in 8th grade Pre-Algebra.  While we work towards this goal, I am aware that math anxiety or a lack of confidence may exist.  I appreciate and understand this.  Regardless of where a student is, our motto can be “never give up”.  For most students, success in math comes with diligence in doing the homework.  Any time a student is confused or frustrated, I urge them to visit me before or after school.  Also, they have my home phone number – I gladly accept calls from students who have a question about their homework.

It’s hard to beat someone…who never gives up – anonymous quote, hung on the door of our math room
