February 18, 2018

Thanks VERY much to the Blessed Sacrament Men’s Club for their amazing generosity in support of our Blessed Sacrament St. Vincent de Paul Conference!  The Men’s Club is currently providing $200 per month to SVdP, which will be a huge boost in the arm, allowing us to provide rent and utility assistance, food for homeless meals, etc. throughout the year, for those in need.  The Men’s Club also sponsored SVdP’s annual Christmas meal deliveries to those less fortunate in 2017 with a $1,500 donation. God bless the Blessed Sacrament Men’s Club!

The “40 Cans for Lent Food Drive” starts this weekend!  Sponsored by the Blessed Sacrament Knights of Columbus, the goal is to receive donations of 4000 pounds of non-perishable food.  The food will be donated to God’s Food Pantry.  Joanne Batiste, from the Pantry asked that if asked, their current specific needs are small boxes of cereal (12 oz. if possible), pop tarts, canned protein like tuna, Spaghetti-o’s, or stew, crackers and canned fruit.  But anything will be accepted and GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks to Dan Martin and Aaron O’Brien, for assisting with a recent refrigerator donation from one parishioner to another! Just a reminder that we can always use volunteers (and trucks) to help us move furniture to clients in need.  Please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. Father Jirak and our Priests generously designated a portion of the collection from Ash Wednesday Masses to go to our Blessed Sacrament Society of St. Vincent de Paul, to help the poor; thank you!  And thanks to the volunteers who served as ushers for the three Masses.

Home Visits

Sonya Brinkman and Michelle Martin went on their first “home visits” this past week.  Our Blessed Sacrament Society of St. Vincent de Paul does many different activities to help those who are less fortunate, but “home visits” are the fundamental work of the Society. These occur when someone in need contacts Blessed Sacrament urgently needing financial help.  We set up a visit in the home of the person needing help, and two of our members visit them to see what we, as Catholics, can do to help.  Welcome Sonya and Michelle!

·         Thanks very much to everyone who supported last Sunday’s homeless luncheon!  One of our SVdP members bought and donated about 175 of largest baked potatoes you have ever seen.   SVdP members wrapped them in aluminum foil after our last meeting, and then the donor baked the potatoes last Sunday morning.  Special insulated bags kept the potatoes piping hot until they were served at 1 p.m. that day.  Besides baked potatoes, butter, sour cream and cheese, we served chili, Fritos, dessert items and water. Due to the recent bitterly cold weather, with Sunday’s weather being very nice, we had a huge turnout of homeless Wichitans, and  poor families who brought their children. (Note, a special thank you to members of the Parish family who donate a Sam’s card every month to help offset the costs of the homeless luncheon!)

·         Sadly, a parishioner who works at a local hospital told us that they currently have two cases of frostbite at the hospital; one man lost fingers due to the cold and one man lost his legs. Thanks to all who support our annual coat and blanket drive to try to prevent this type of tragedy.

·         Thanks to everyone who helped move the belongings of a St. Vincent de Paul client from one rental home to another last Saturday. This Mother and four children were being evicted, but SVdP was able to help her get a new apartment. Unfortunately, she didn’t have any way to move most of her belongings, and was on the verge of losing all of her possessions! St. Vincent de Paul volunteers brought trucks and muscles and were able to move all of the possessions to the new apartment, and the young Mother and children were extremely appreciative.

·      The food of the month for the Weekend Kids’ Food Program is canned soup (microwaveable cans are convenient for the kids).
