The Lord’s Diner, a not-for-profit soup kitchen operated by the community, for the community, and sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of Wichita, provides an evening meal seven days a week, 365 days a year, including holidays. Responding to Christ’s call to feed the hungry, it seeks to achieve this goal in a spirit of compassion, respect, and loving service through cooperative efforts with churches, individuals, and organizations.
Located at the corner of Broadway and Central in downtown Wichita, The Lord’s Diner serves dinner from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Large volunteer groups from area churches and organizations are the core of the volunteer base. These groups are scheduled to serve once a month. Blessed Sacrament Parish volunteers at The Lord’s Diner on the first Sunday of each month. An email goes out two weeks ahead asking volunteers if they are available that month to help during the Sunday afternoon prep shift, noon to 3 p.m., or during the dinner shift, from 5 to 7:45 p.m. The afternoon work could be chores such as chopping onions or making a soup; the work is all done inside the Diner’s, large, up-to-the-minute-outfitted kitchen under the supervision of a full-time cook. The evening shift begins as guests line up in the Diner lobby waiting for the doors to open. We typically serve 350 dinners on a Sunday night. Jobs during the evening vary from helping guests sign in at the welcome table, handing guests a tray and silverware, ladling food onto plates, pouring water, iced tea, or coffee, clearing trays, or loading dirty dishes to run through the industrial-size dishwasher. Many times Blessed Sacrament volunteers have the pleasure of working with Wichita State University international students, who also volunteer. We need a roster of 10 volunteers for the afternoon shift and 36 volunteers for the evening shift. For many years a loyal team from the church have helped each month. We are actively seeking new volunteers who would help. The work keeps us busy, but newcomers will find themselves welcomed, quickly into the swing-of-things, and maybe finding some new friends as part of this vital community.
To volunteer at The Lord’s Diner you first must obtain your Food Handler’s Card. You can do this in one of three ways: attending a free, two-hour class offered by the city of Wichita, taking the class on-line (for a fee) at an approved website or checking the weekly parish bulletin for where a class will be offered at a parish in the diocese .The free city-run classes are on the 1st and 3rd Mondays and Saturday of each month at the City of Wichita Environmental Health Department, 1900 E. 9th Street. Typically, there is a line outside the building to take that class and would-be students are granted a seat on a first-come, first-serve basis. The online classes (approved by the City of Wichita) can be found at the city website, www.wichita.gov. Go to that site to register for either of these city-run classes or phone 316-268-8351.
