“I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and my own know me. My sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me.”  --John 10: 14, 27

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is the approach used in the Parish School of Religion for youth in kindergarten through sixth grade. Rooted in the Bible, the Liturgy and Catholic Tradition, this method is based on the educational principals of Maria Montessori. Catechesis occurs in a specially prepared environment, called the Atrium, which children come to recognize as a space reserved for quiet work, prayer, and contemplation. Even the youngest children who visit the Blessed Sacrament Atrium learn that through silence, even while focused on working, we are best able to hear the voice of God.

There are very many materials used, which are first presented by the catechists (stewards who themselves receive over 90 hours of training) and are then made available for each child to work with independently as a means of personal prayer and contemplation. These materials, which are often made by hand, are carefully designed to assist each child to contemplate, experience and grow in their love of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who loves us unconditionally.

The Parish School of Religion, or PSR, provides catechesis and sacramental preparation to parish youth in kindergarten through eighth grade who are not enrolled in Catholic schools. Classes are held during the school year on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m., and supplement the faith formation in the family and wider parish community. Students learn the teachings and traditions of our Catholic faith.

Catechesis, as part of the new evangelization, is fundamental to our parish life. Please pray for PSR – for our catechists and our participating families.
